“Hey you,” Dian said from the doorway.
“Hey, babe,” I replied with a smile. “Did you ladies have a nice day?”
“How about you?”
“Met some people. Had some good conversations. Went for a training session.”
Dian made her way over to me and sat in my lap.
“Damn, that’s a nice surprise!” I marveled.
She threw her arms around my neck and kissed me lightly on the lips.
“That was sweet. What was that for?”
“Because I love you.”
“Thank you, Dian. I love you, too.”
“I’m glad you built this man cave.”
“I think it was the start of me coming out of the mid-life funk.”
“Glad you did.”
“Speaking of funks, how are you doing with this whole DUI case and therapy thing?”
I sighed. “The lawyers will get me out of legal trouble. The therapist will get me out of my own head. But Dian, if I ‘ve learned anything in this process, it’s going to take me to make changes.”
“No drinking. At least for the foreseeable future.”
“Do you want me to get all of my alcohol out of the house?”
“Hasn’t been a problem yet. If it becomes one, I’ll let you know.”
“Do you want me to come to therapy with you at some point?”
“It may come to that. Not sure where he’s leading all of that yet.”
“Buck, are you and me OK?”
“Dian…” I pulled her close and squeezed her tightly before kissing her on the cheek.
She pulled away. “That didn’t answer my question.”
“From my perspective, we’re great. I love our little rendezvous schedule–I believe it helps us guard against all the other shit that encircles us.”
“That’s good to hear. I feel the same way.”
“See you Tuesday?”
“You betcha,” Dian replied with a smile and a peck.
“Good. See you then.”
“Not so fast.”
Dian leaned in, kissed me deeply, and whispered, “What about tonight?”
“What about it?”
